What is Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular Dystrophy is a degenerative illness where the skeletal muscles of the body become progressive weaker to the point of total dysfunction. As the muscles loss mass they are replaced by fatty deposits. In rarer forms, the disease can also attack the heart muscles.

What causes Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder. For some forms of MD the exact gene is identified, where in rarer forms of the disease it is not wholly determined what gene defect causes the illness. Of the nine identified types of Muscular Dystrophy, muscle weakness is the most common symptom among all patients. While patients with MD vary in age and strength, many are confined to wheelchair or beds - some for most of their lives.
