What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density, a condition that causes bones to become fragile. The bones lose mass and strength and become porous. As bones break, it becomes difficult for them to heal quickly. This condition can lead to other problems and cause much pain.

What causes Osteoporosis?

As people grow older, the cells that build up bone (osteoblasts) gradually deplete, leaving behind the cells that remove bone mass (osteoclasts). Gradual loss of estrogen in post-menopausal women contributes greatly to bone loss. Osteoporosis, if not treated, can weaken the spine's vertebrae and give way to back pain.
