What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's Disease is a degenerative illness that effects the brain. As the disease progresses, the extrapyramidal system, which controls communication between the brain's neurons and the muscles in the body, grows weaker. Motor skills are greatly affected; patients with Parkinson's may display mild shaking to a severe loss of bodily function, depending upon the severity of the illness.

What causes Parkinson's Disease?

At present, the direct cause of Parkinson's Disease is not known. It is speculated that genetics plays a role to some extent, as do environment and age. Whatever the cause, patients afflicted with Parkinson's Disease may experience a breakdown of their neurological and muscular systems that could confine them to wheelchairs in the latter stages of the disease. This in turn could give rise to added, unnecessary back pain and related conditions brought on from prolonged inactivity.
