What is Quadriplegia?

Quadriplegia is paralysis of the human body below the neck - all limbs are rendered unable to function on their own. Quadriplegia may be caused by injury to the cervical spinal cord, or by a spinal condition such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) that renders loss of function in the legs, arms and pelvic region. Quadriplegics, as a result, are confined to bed or wheelchairs. While many quadriplegics are able to function in society, prolonged physical inactivity may cause circulatory problems in the back and legs, leading to pressure sores and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
